The U.S.S. Enterprise is assigned to take Lieutenant Mira Romaine to the planet Memory Alpha, the location of the central library of the United Federation of Planets; here she is to supervise the transfer of data gathered by the Enterprise across to the facility. Chief Engineer Scott is immediately attracted to the beautiful woman, who happily returns his feelings. But while en route to the planet the Enterprise encounters a strange energy storm which is travelling at warp speed; the phenomenon penetrates the ship's shields and affects the crew, attacking different parts of their brains. Mira is also attacked, and to Scotty's distress she faints. The storm then destroys all the inhabitants of Memory Alpha and wipes the library's computer memory banks. Mira now finds that she can predict where the storm will strike next: the Enterprise. It is soon discovered that the strange lights in the storm are non-corporeal entities from a long-dead planet named Zetar; however, learning of Mira's high susceptibility to empathic transmissions the aliens take over her body and refuse to relinquish control - can Kirk find a way to free Mira from the Zetars' influence?
